Cool or Wierd: Rug on Rug Action

I have to admit, I've never seen anyone put a rug on top of a rug, and I can't really decide if it's cool and I just don't get it, or if it's trying too hard to be different. What do you guys think?

I remember seeing it done by Henredon in some of their ads- they did it quite beautifully- I think though that this falls a bit flat.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. I like the bigger rug, but I feel like the smaller one is pretty pointless... more of a design hiccup than anything. Thanks for the comment!

Like anything, done right it works! I like some good rug layering, builds character...and pile.

Ok, bad joke. Couldn't resist.

I think it doesn't work in this image but I love rug on rug layering. I think it produces a very cool bohemian look. In 1 of my pavilion living rooms, I've just layered 3 kilim patchwork rugs and I think it looks very nomad.

I think what's wrong here is that there is no contrast between the two rugs. That top one is just blah, not to mention the stripe on stripe... a solid or a floral would be my choice for the top rug.

I've been seeing this since before I moved into the house I live in now, so a good 3 years. And I was looking forward to doing it! I've done it in my living room. =)

It really helps cut costs when you can purchase a cheaper rug to cover more space and a more expensive rug on top.

Okay, sorry for this super long comment! I just found your blog. And I think it's great. =)
